Strathmartine Community Empowerment Team (SCET) engaged with a range of city-wide practitioners to discuss possible need for support in the local community for people using drugs. Discussions resulted in agreement that a free café in the heart of the community could provide an opportunity for local people with addictions to attend and share their thoughts on what services and activities would be of benefit to them and others in their local community.
St Mary’s Community Centre is the location for the weekly Friday café and it is targeted at people with addiction issues but other members of the community are welcome to attend too. The café is organised by a worker from SCET and delivered with support by volunteers from the local community. In addition, workers from city-wide drug support projects attend the café and provide support and advice to those in attendance. Hillcrest Futures provide weekly support and there is a volunteer peer worker that also attends each week to engage with the café users and provide support and a listening ear to them.
The weekly menu comprises of soup, sandwiches, pudding, tea & coffee and is free to all although, donations can be made.
The café is open from 11am – 1pm at 39 St Kilda Road, DD3 9ND.
